The Horta-Guinardó district is the third largest in Barcelona, only surpassed by Sants-Montjuïc and Sarriá-Sant Gervasi. It has an area of 1,192 hectares and it represents 11.9% of the whole municipality.
It has 169,920 residents and is located in the northeast of the city, between the Gràcia and Nou Barris districts. It is demarcated to the south by Eixample, Sant Andreu and Sant Martí and to the north, through the Collserola mountain rainge, by the municipalities of Sant Cugat del Vallés and Cerdanyola del Vallès.
Its basic territorial units are as follows: El Guinardó, BaixGuinardó, Can Baró, Font d'en Fargas, El Carmel, La Teixonera, La Clota, Horta, La Vall d’Hebron, Montbau and Sant Genís dels Agudells.
The occupation and urbanization process in this district has been very much conditioned by its varied topography. Physical units like the Collserola mountain range, the Hebron valley or the Horta river mean that it has an urban structure that is very different depending on where you are in the neighbourhood.
