The Borne neighbourhood is one of the oldest and most central parts of the city of Barcelona It is demarcated by Passeig de Picasso and Carrer de la Princesa, and stretches de Carrer del Rec, Passeig del Born and Avinguda del Marquès de l’Argentera.
In terms of its most interesting architectural features, it is worth noting the Gothic fishmarket, of which the Saló de Contractacions and the Sala dels Cònsols. The fishmarket has a neoclasical façade that dates to the 18th century. In this neighbourhood you will also find the Gothic basilica of Santa María del Mar, built to symbolise the economic power held by residents of this new district.
Half of the district was demolished in 1714, after the defeat of the Catalans in the War of Succession, so that the Ciutadella fortress could be built and a large defensive raised level put in place around it.
The Ciutadella was destroyed in the 19th century and the raised levels were urbanized, with the Ciutadella park being built over them and the old Borne market placed there too, another one of the neighbourhood’s most attractive features. At the same time, the Borne neighbourhood stands out as it has the Picasso Museum and the Fossar de les Morenes, which are the Roman remains beneath the Borne market ,and the Ciutadella park.
